On April 19th 2006 a new free elementary school, completely financed and furnished by the Cuomo Foundation, was inaugurated in the heart of Chennai, right next to the Cathedral dedicated to St. Thomas. The building (The Cuomo Foundation Building) covers a surface of 1825 square meters and houses more than 1000 children coming from the slums existing in the area.

The school is totally free of charge and is run by the Parish priest of the St. Thome Cathedral. Many member of the Cuomo Foundation traveled from Europe to take part of the inauguration together with the Most Rev. Dr. A. M. Chinnappa Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore, Bishop Lawrence Pius, the Parish Priest of the Cathedral Fr. Lawrence Raj and many other Chennai authorities.

The inauguration ceremony was followed by an unforgettable four-hour show on the grounds of the Cathedral.
